5 Signs Your Roof Needs to Be Replaced

No one wants to spend the money to replace their roof. But if you know it’s been a couple decades since your roof has been replaced, the time for a new roof may be right around the corner. It may also be right now! Although the average roof lasts between 20 and 25 years, there are reasons why you may need to contact a roofing contractor sooner than that. Here are a few of the most common signs your roof needs to be replaced.

1. Shingle Problems

Your roof can’t do its job if a lot of the singles are warped or missing. While just a few damaged shingles can easily be replaced, if the damage is widespread, the whole roof may need to go. When you’re checking up on the condition of your shingles, pay extra attention to the slopes that are exposed to direct sunlight and the spots where the slopes meet.

2. Missing Granules

Shingle granules help protect your roof. If you lose a large amount of them, your roof will be more vulnerable and the chances of decay go up. You can see if your roof has lost a lot of granules if the shingles look bald in some spots. Your downspouts and gutters could also be full of granules that have dislodged due to wear and tear.

3. Dark Spots

If there are dark spots on your roof, algae growth could be the culprit. Although airborne algae can sometimes be resolved with a repair, other times it can be more serious and may warrant a roof replacement. It could reduce your roof’s lifespan. Algae growth may also be pointing to a moisture issue that needs to be resolved.

4. Cracks That Let the Light In

If you’re inside your attic or another spot in your home where the roof is exposed, light should not be coming in through the roof. This is a telltale sign of cracks or missing boards that also leave your roof vulnerable to leaks. If there are a lot of cracks or missing boards, your energy bills may also be higher than they should be.

5. Visible Sagging

A roof shouldn’t droop or sag. If it is, it means there’s probably trapped moisture or rotten boards. If you’ve noticed this problem, you need to get it looked at immediately! The longer you wait to get the roof looked at by a roofing contractor, the more the roof will sag. This could create more extensive damage to your home and a big safety hazard.
